For many, the adidas Stan Smith is the quintessential trainer. It’s transitioned from a high-tech tennis shoe to an essential casual trainer that’s broken records for its sales. The basic style hasn’t changed much in 70 years, but the construction has. Born in 1963 as a streamlined yet sturdy leather tennis shoe to rival the canvas styles that had been known before, the adidas Stan Smith was actually named after French player Robert Haillet at first. Haillet repped the shoe until his retirement in 1971, but adidas didn’t change the name to Stan Smith shoes until 1978. At that point, Stan Smith, the world’s no. 1 tennis star, had his face and signature emblazoned on the sides. From then on, the Stan Smiths weren’t just big on the court, they became massive on the street too. They even entered the Guinness Book of World Records for pairs sold in 1988 and would go on to appear in bars for Jay Z, on covers of Vogue, and as the default finishing touch to casual outfits all over the world. They became the casual trainer, and many argue they were the first to make the jump from a specific sports style to a casual kick so successfully. Iconic.
