PUMA TRAINERS: CLASSICS WITHOUT STRIPES

Shoes built to embody the puma’s speed, agility, endurance and strength. Get yours and become that cat. What feature comes to mind when you think of PUMA trainers? The famous leaping cat? The pull tabs at the back? That classic wavy stripe on the sides? They are all possible. But that stripe is called the Formstrip. And it’s been a PUMA trademark since 1958.

PUMA SHOES: THE HISTORY OF THE FORMSTRIP

For the Formstrip, it all started in the early ‘20s when football boots were super clunky and super tough to keep on for a full 90 minutes. In the ‘50s, lighter materials were around but they caused stability issues. Enter: The Formstrip. Right in time for the 1958 World Cup. With that wavy strip of leather on the side, PUMA shoes had better lateral support. Those simple Formstrips hugged the feet, allowed better freedom of movement and prevented ankle twisting. Unsurprisingly it’s been ever-present on PUMA trainers and shoes ever since. Always there, but never a stripe.

PUMA SHOES THROUGH THE AGES

Shoot back to 1919. Two brothers called Adolf and Rudolf set up an athletic shoe company from their parents’ home in Germany. 28 years later, they split. Adolf takes some staff and creates a company called adidas. THE adidas. Rudolf takes his own staff, 14 of them, and creates what would become the PUMA brand. Why PUMA? For products that would embody the big cat’s attributes of speed, strength, endurance and agility.

PUMA trainers were indeed designed this way. They weren’t just innovative, they were available in unique colorways which made them popular every day, not just for sports. Come the ‘80s the now iconic PUMA Suede was booming in the US and was fast becoming the shoe of choice for hip hop heads and break-dancers. Meanwhile, it became the firm favorite for football fans in the UK. All of this was encouraged by blockbusters like Boris Becker and Diego Maradona, wearing PUMAs at Wimbledon and World Cups alike.

Fast forward to the now and you’ll see PUMA shoes on the feet of stars like Usain Bolt, Lewis Hamilton, Rihanna and Selena Gomez. Not a bad crew to join.
